How to Extend a Wireless Repeater

Sometimes your router doesn't broadcast its signal far enough to reach your entire house. Even when it does, there may still be dead spots where the signal drops in and out while you're trying to use your electronic device. Even with a wireless repeater or booster, you sometimes still need just a little more boost. Wireless repeaters boost the radio single produced by a wireless router. The repeater receives the signal the router broadcasts and re-broadcasts it over a longer distance.

Instructions

·         Position the repeater at a point that the wireless router broadcasts a very strong signal. The guide that accompanies the repeater will probably advise you to put it at the halfway mark between your devices and the router. Double-check the position to make sure it's not a hole in the broadcast signal.
·         Update your firmware regularly to make sure the wireless repeater is operating correctly and that any bugs have been fixed.
·         Turn off any extra features that the wireless repeater may have. Only allow it to perform the main function. In the book, "Wireless Network Hacks & Mods for Dummies" Daniel D. Briere and Patrick J. Hurley write, "Make sure you turn off any routing or DHCP functionality in the remote repeater stations." Leave that work up to the main station.
·         Try different IP address configurations with the help of the repeater's technical support department. These personnel can provide you with a range of IP addresses that are compatible with your wireless network and walk you through changing the IP address configured to your repeater.
·         Remove any cordless phones and microwaves from the direct line between the wireless router and the repeater. These devices produce noise that interferes with the wireless repeater.
·         Change the direction of the antenna if your repeater has an antenna to find the maximum signal strength.
·         Add aluminum foil to the antennae of the repeater similar to the way you used to do on old tube televisions. Strip off 8 to 10 inches of foil and fold it in half. Use electric tape to attach it to the antenna to reflect the wireless signal farther. Point the antenna toward the direction you want to increase the signal.
·         Physically move the repeater around until you have maximum coverage.
